NCAR scientist and Center for Geospace Storms Deputy Director Dr. Michael Wiltberger- From numbers to images: Visualizing space weather
read summaryHow can we see what happens far beyond what our eyes can process? Scientists are able to use data to paint a picture of massive eruptions on the Sun propagating through interplanetary space and their impact on Earth. The effects of space weather on our society are far reaching and can range from producing beautiful phenomena such as the aurora as well as disruptions in our communications and power grids. Listen to an NCAR Explorer Series conversation with NCAR scientist and Center for Geospace Storms Deputy Director Dr. Michael Wiltberger to discuss how we can take enormous amounts of data produced by space weather simulations and convert them into images and visualizations that help us understand the dynamics of the near Earth space environment.

Space Storms in the Upper Atmosphere and Ionosphere
read summaryPart of the NCAR Explorer Series. Light from the aurora, high above the polar regions of the Earth, is a faint but spectacular manifestation of weather in space. It is generated in the upper atmosphere by electric currents coupling the magnetosphere to the ionosphere, driven by space storms from the Sun. In this Explorer Series talk, Dr. Stan Solomon delves into the physics and chemistry that controls the ionosphere, how the aurora is formed, and a new scientific partnership called the Center for Geospace Storms. Come and learn about the ionosphere and wonders of nature above in the sky.

Worlds Beyond Earth
read summaryCGS simulations are featured in the "Worlds Beyond Earth" show at the Hayden planetarium of the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in NYC. A GAMERA simulation of a geospace storm was visualized by AMNH scientific visualization experts, and the sequence shown here has been selected to screen in this year's Siggraph 2020 Electronic Theater. "Worlds Beyond Earth" tells the story of the surprisingly dynamic nature of the worlds that share our solar system and the unique conditions that make life on Earth possible. Narrated by Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o, "Worlds Beyond Earth" takes viewers on a journey far beyond our own blue planet to marvel at the latest discoveries from our cosmic neighbors.
